Highlights of talks by conference speakers

Dr. Alarik Arenander “Educate the Whole Child by Developing Total Brain Functioning”

Dr. Arenander described the latest brain research methods and findings, emphasizing the importance of dissolving the stress that inhibits brain functioning and using the Transcendental Meditation® technique to enhance the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, responsible for reasoning and moral development.

Dr. Vernon Barnes “Impact of the Transcendental Meditation Program on Absenteeism and School Behavior in Adolescents”

Dr. Barnes described his research on the effects of the Transcendental Meditation® program on cardiovascular disease among adolescents in Augusta, GA, public schools. He found a consistent reduction in blood pressure, as compared with controls, and reduced absenteeism, disciplinary infractions, and suspensions, and less anger in female students. This research has been published in scientific journals.

Dr. Richard Beall “How Do We Teach to the Whole Child?”

Dr. Beall introduced the conference theme and each of the speakers in the context of four paradigm shifts from a Consciousness-Based perspective on education:

1. By investing in rest, we can prepare students and teachers for optimal learning and teaching.

2. The Transcendental Meditation technique offers total brain development, rather than isolated growth.

3. Consciousness-Based education provides a systematic self-referral experience, helping students find connectedness.

4. With knowledge of the field effects of consciousness, schools can become centers of coherence, to transform society rather than just reflect its problems.

Dr. Ashley Deans “Education for Tomorrow—Today: Consciousness-Based Education at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment”

Dr. Deans presented an overview of Consciousness-Based education and described its application in the award-winning Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment. He introduced the use of Maharishi Vedic ScienceSM and other curriculum innovations, Consciousness-Based instructional methods, and a summary of the remarkable achievements of the School.

This Association offers the scientifically validated Consciousness-BasedSM education program, founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. More than 40 years of experience and over 600 scientific research studies have shown this non-sectarian program to improve educational outcomes, reduce stress and antisocial behavior, increase creativity and intelligence, and unfold the inner happiness of students and teachers of all cultural and educational backgrounds.

Dr. Jamie Grant “The Need for Transcendence in School: A Scientific Perspective”

Dr. Grant described how the knowledge of Consciousness-Based education provides a vocabulary for and systematic experience of transcendence, and why this is important. We can now relate inner experiences with knowledge of the unified field from quantum physics, and can describe higher states of consciousness in terms of physics, psychology, and behavioral elements.

Dr. Christopher Jones “Dare the School Build a New Social Order? The Role of Consciousness in School and Societal Change”

Dr. Jones spoke on the history of reforming schools and the cycle of dependence: the design of schools depends on the quality of the government, which depends on quality of collective consciousness, which depends on the schools. To change schools you need to change collective consciousness.

Judge David C. Mason “The Role of the Transcendental Meditation Program in Juvenile Justice”

Judge Mason cited the differences among individuals in stress-coping ability and the value he has found in using the Transcendental Meditation technique for probationers to reduce stress and promote positive social behavior.

Dr. George Rutherford “Transformation: How Schools Can Become Violence-Free”

Dr. Rutherford likened the Transcendental Meditation program to an immunization for stress; he considers it a requirement for education. Dr. Rutherford described the success he had bringing meditation into his school to improve learning ability. He urged participants to be bold, to introduce CBE in their areas.

Dr. Bill Sheppard “ADHD: A Consciousness-Based Perspective”

Dr. Sheppard provided an historical overview of ADHD and the dangers of using drugs to control behavior. He called for a new paradigm for attention that acknowledges consciousness and the beneficial effects on attention from the Transcendental Meditation program.

Dr. Fred Travis “Experience Changes the Brain: Enlightenment is Physiological Training”

Dr. Travis described several interesting findings from his research on brain changes during meditation. Both new and long-term meditators demonstrated total brain functioning during the Transcendental Meditation technique, but brain coherence in the long-term group continued when their eyes were open. He has also found that meditators need not stay in a state of tension to perform optimally on a reaction test.

Craig Pearson “Know Thyself: Awakening the Foundation of All Learning”
Mr. Pearson described the history of the highest aspirations of education, to “Know Thyself.” Peak experiences have characteristics: great happiness; inner peace; a connectedness with other people or nature; a natural, familiar, and simple state of wakefulness. These experiences were life transforming, but frustrated the experiencer in not being replicable, a situation remedied with the Transcendental Meditation technique.

Dale Stephens “Project ME!: Consciousness-Based Education at Boys and Girls Clubs”
Mr. Stephens shared his experience directing an inner city after-school program that provided the Transcendental Meditation program for students and staff. Individuals commented on a wide range of benefits and the club environment was transformed to greater orderliness, harmony, and happiness.
